I had previously had some correspondence in 1868 with a friend in a small business transaction at Hong Kong (Mr F. J. Hageland, Your Lordship's Solicitor, since deceased) enclosing an order for certain Goods, & promising in Jan 1869 he sent it. I would send them, to be paid £50 on account, & remit the balance in due course,

I was promised to pay the remainder by Quarterly instalments. I looked upon this as a sort of guarantee of his respectability, I sent the first portion of the Goods in the same month of January, & the remainder in October following.

I am sorry to say he has not done as promised, & although I have repeatedly applied to him, I have not succeeded in eliciting any reply. Under these circumstances, not having received any further remittance, & after writing to him several times without obtaining a reply, I applied in the latter part of the year to his Colonial appointment, which I knew had been settled. I requested that the amount be remitted to me.

I trust your Lordship will give such instructions as will cause the amount to be remitted to me.
